Creature of Our Make

Couldn’t find you last night.
Wandered without my flashlight
Like a smashed firefly
Thought I was resistant to
Things I thought I’d never do
I’d slip into madness for those eyes

A cliffhanger with no resolve
Just a memory of us all swimming
No one missing their real live.
But I had a vision of my death
If the rope swing escorted me
To float by your side

In my dreams I’m falling into water
Unknown depths of the lake
I can feel some teeth sink into my feet.
Is it a creature of our make?
What sends me flying through the forest
To watch love from my lonely hive?
Let me simply feel your presence
And I’ll drip honey by and by

Wooden Bench

Thought I saw water from the path
And that I had discovered a source untapped
Like some Magellan I asked you to lapse
And wander into the water, perhaps

Fallen tree trunks that gave me height
Walked a tightrope with you as my guide
Birds in their splashing churches
I was right…It was a stream
Overflowing from the rain last night

I was gonna build a plane
Of bamboo and silk and fly away
But I’m on the path with him, with him
And my fear of ending less and less it begins

A wooden bench with a sign
Sit awhile in memory of a fine friend
I’ll sit and let the sunright rile
While you sit in your head
Oh leave your mind, my sweet anxious child

I was gonna build a plane
Of bamboo and silk and fly away
But I’m on the path with him-with him
And my fear of ending less and less it begins

Sunshine Blood

On the rooftop, summer wants to hold your hand
And so do I, beautiful and difficult man
Like a lightbulb lodged in the soil
To illuminate the beach grass at night
I’ll be the one to hold your smallest movements
Giant in my mind

You were right when you said we’d get by
One more day breaks, cajoling me to love this life.
And my love for you, it will never run dry
And if it did I would slowly become some poorer kind
But it’s farfetched, we’re far from the faultline
While you love me so adroitly
How did I become wife?
Oh I love you like the blood of sunshine
And the night that falls, consoling

I left those ones tolerant of tepid fate
Who’d flinch at this desire
I want you to drink me Til I become
a body of water in your empire
We’re getting dressed, I understand
we can only go so deep, come so close
We’re driving back past
the horses in the darkness
and the drifters on the road

Mariposa

Mariposa, Mariposa
A Spanish word I knew so I could ask the little girl
If that’s what she wanted me to paint on her cheek
We couldn’t speak so we stood very still

In the morning, we walk around the city
To invite the children to the fair
Some mamas bring them, others will come drifting
Alone through the gates, to play a game
Win a fish or a stuffed bear

Too many places neglected by witness
Where angel faces are left to never know
What means peaceful and what means goodness
With little chance to question why lighter skin gets to go

In the evening, sunlight of spring still falling
On new buds of the branches
Like eyes that want to see life so.
And Minerva’s brought the children
To plant seeds along the parkway
Their hands deep in the soil
Which ones will see their flowers grow?
Which ones will see their flowers grow?

I hope you will see your flowers grow…
I hope you will see…

Cheating Gong

Leaving, the gong sound of cheating
What can you do, he wasn't true
Echoes of breakage grow softer
What can you do but fight like hell for you?

Autumn hints at its coming
That coolness buzzing in the last warmth
The last summer you'll know this house
You'll be surrounded by those artifacts
Of your old earth spinning
Full of sweet worry for another being
Now this early leaving who you loved
Who you loved, oh who you loved
Who you loved, oh who you loved

Queasy with all of this freedom
You think you might move
But isn't this your home too?
Autumn was the time for your children
And their journeys to school
And all that they'd do

Autumn hints at its coming
That coolness buzzing in the last warmth
The last summer you'll know this house
You'll be surrounded by those artifacts
Of your old earth spinning
Full of sweet worry for another being
Now this early leaving who you loved
Who you loved, oh who you loved
Who you loved, oh who you loved
